In 2006, Patek Philippe launched the reference 5711/1A to mark the 30th anniversary of the Nautilus model. Aside from the original reference 3700, which was discontinued in 1990, all other Nautilus models (including the 3800/1A, 4700/1A, 3710/1A, 3711/1A, and 3712/1A) were discontinued as of 2006 with the launch of the new collection. In addition to the new steel 5711/1A, the Nautilus collection would include for the first time a rose gold model, models in gold with leather straps, and a chronograph model (Ref. 5980).

Staying true to the original design of the reference 3700, the reference 5711 featured subtle differences – the most notable being a sapphire crystal display back and the addition of a center seconds hand. The hands and hour markers were made slightly larger, and the case was made out of three parts, as opposed to two. The bracelet proportions changed slightly to have an improved connection, and the bracelet clasp featured a three-part foldover clasp, while the original was a two-part folding clasp. The overall size of the case increased by only one millimeter, from 42mm up to 43mm.

It is interesting to note that at the time of the original Nautilus launch in 1976, a client would have been able to buy this model soon after. However, at the time of the launch of the new collection in 2006, there would be a waiting period before any models could be purchased. A modern classic, the reference 5711/1A is the successful evolution of the original Jumbo Nautilus ref. 3700.
